I Know Sad Bastards

Music post!!!

I just received an e-mail from my BF4EVA, Ms. Bee, asking me what my top ten saddest songs are. Initially, I thought I would need to take some time to think about it but knew of a couple off the top of my head. Well, as it turns out, I know some saaaad bastards. In fact, a good-sized chunk of my music library is constituted of sad bastards. So, sharing my list of top ten saddest songs came much more quickly and easily than I'd originally thought it would. And now I'm going to share it with y'all.

Colette's Top Ten Saddest Songs
In no particular order...

  • Chicken Wire by The Pernice Brothers
  • L'il Wallet Picture by Richard Buckner
  • In a Ditch by Scud Mountain Boys
  • Upward Over the Mountain by Iron and Wine
  • Lost Cause by Beck
  • Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
  • I See a Darkness by Bonnie 'Prince' Billy
  • This Night Has Opened My Eyes by The Smiths
  • Leavin' on a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul and Mary
  • Go Down Easy by Dan Fogelberg

I can think of several honorable mentions, but will save them for another post. Besides, I don't need y'all to think I sit around listening to sad sack tunes ALL the time.

When I was working as a DJ in Provo I got a call one night from a woman who said she was depressed but couldn't cry. She told me her psychologist recommended calling the radio station and requesting the saddest song they had.

I played Linda Ronstandt's "Long, Long Time."

The woman called back an hour later and asked me to play something sadder.

If you want something really sad try "Adagio for Strings in G minor" by Albinoni. (PETA always uses it as a soundtrack when they show footage of fur farms...)

Oh wow, that makes sense... I think G minor is one of the saddest-sounding keys there is. Off the top of my head, I don't know the piece to which you are referring but am going to look it up to see if I recognize it.

That woman's therapist had a good idea. I have a "sad" CD on hand for those times when I just need to purge, but can't.

Speaking of animal cruelty (one of the saddest and most tragic topics there is), when I was down visiting friends in Alabama the topic of that SPCA commercial with Sarah McLaughlin came up. NONE of us are able to watch that commercial without having a major meltdown of sad. I never thought her song 'Angel' was particularly sad... UNTIL I saw it paired up with images of abused and neglected animals on that ad. I always thought I was just hypersensitive (I'd have to change the channel when it came on), but apparently, I am not alone with that one.
